The Canon of Western Literature

The canon is the collection of works that represent a period or genre. The canon of western literature would include the collected works of William Shakespeare, since his writing style has had a significant impact on nearly all aspects of that genre. A canon is a text containing a view of the Bible or the Koran.

Sometimes within religious traditions, as views evolve or change, some formerly canonical texts become "apocryphal." Some apocryphal works are influential but never formal accepted. It's important that the canon includes works that are representative of society, so that students can see a snapshot of a given point in time.

The Old Testament and the New: Seventeen Books

The Old Testament has thirty-nine books according to the Protestant method, but only twenty-four according to the Jewish method. The books are the same, but the way they are divided is different. The council of Nicea is accused of having a huge effect on the church's decision to use the Bible and change some of its teachings.

Some of the books in the New Testament canon have been questioned as being inspired by God. The books spoken against are known as the antilegomena. Some members of the early church doubted the authority of seven books.

The reasons vary from book to book. The "Report of Pilate" and the later interviews were exposed as frauds. The entire pages of Eli's story of the Magi were copied from the novel Ben Hur.

Mormonism teaches that there are many gods instead of one God. Mormonism denies the doctrine of the Trinity and teaches that each male can become a god himself. The salvation is through faith and the punishment of the wicked.

The Elder Scrolls - Tamriel

The situation can be compared to other cultures. The Elder Scrolls tales are a group of linked stories that are told by many different authors over a period of time. The Elder Scrolls does not clearly define the term "canon", which may cause confusion.

The definitions used to group documents are broadly listed in order from more narrow to more open. Elder Scrolls - Tamriel does not follow that paradigm. In Elder Scrolls, all lore is delivered from people who live their lives in the game, in the world of the game, and based on their beliefs.
