The European Commission on EEA Law

The goal of the EEA Agreement is to create a European Economic Area. The Single Market legislation in the EU is integrated into the EEA Agreement so that it applies throughout the whole of the EEA. The elected representatives from local and regional authorities are involved in the EEA EFTA Forum.

The Committee of the Regions of the European Union, an EU advisory body, was established in 1994 after the signing of the EEA Agreement, and the Forum works closely with it. The EFTA Court is based in Luxembourg and deals with a variety of issues, including the implementation, application or interpretation of EEA law, and gives advisory opinions to courts in the EEA EFTA States on the interpretation of EEA rules. It hears appeals regarding decisions taken by the agency.

The representatives of the EEA EFTA States have the right to be in the committees of the European Commission. They should be consulted in the same way as EU experts, since they participate extensively in the Commission's work. The Commission can get advice from the experts by phone, letter or in meetings.

The Schengen Area

The agreement between Europe and countries facilitates movement. The requirements of the Schengen Agreement are important for Americans who are planning to travel through European countries. The treaty that created Europe's Schengen Area consists of 26 countries where internal border checks have largely been eliminated for short-term tourism, business trips, or travel to a non-Schengen destination.

The 26 countries are Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary,Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lichtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, and Spain. Many countries in the European Union assume that travelers will stay for three months, so you should have a passport that is good for at least six months. Although border checks have been eliminated, you should still have your passport with you as you travel around the world.

The European Economic Area

The European Economic Area is a European territory consisting of 30 countries. The Treaty of 1992 was signed between the member states. It is necessary to join the EEA first before joining the EFTA.

A country that does not belong to the EEA can join the EFTA. The Schengen Area is about travelling without border controls with a unified visa regime for the whole area, while the EEA is about free movement of goods, services, capital and people. The countries of the European Economic Area are part of the Schengen Area.

EFTA Court and Surveillance Authority

The EFTA Court and the EFTA Surveillance Authority monitor the application and transposition of internal market legislation. The EFTA is able to track the implementation of legislation in the EEA countries.
