Fat Tuesday was originally known as Shrove Tuesday and is now called "Mardi Gras" in French. Fat Tuesday is often known as Pancake Day in the English speaking countries because they used up their dairy and eggs by making pancakes and similar pastries. Fat Tuesday is known as Paczki Day, after the rich, jelly-filled donuts made by Poles in Poland the United States.
The Twelfth Night of the Epiphany in New Orleans
The festivities start on January 6th, the Twelfth Night Feast of the Epiphany, when the three kings are supposed to have visited the Christ Child, and then they will celebrate on Fat Tuesday, which is usually on the day before Ash Wednesday. The parties and parades will continue until Lent begins. New Orleans has a legal holiday called Mardi Gras.
