The FAT Method
The method of keeping track of the contents of a hard drive was first introduced in 1977 and is called the FAT method. The table shows the numbers that correspond to the addresses on the hard drive. There are different types of FAT and operating systems that use them.

The only version of FAT that is still widely used is FAT32. As capacities of storage media increase, the weaknesses of FAT32 would become clearer. ExFAT is one of the replacements that is meant for newer, newer media like SDXC.
