What Is Habitat For Humanity Ahs?
Habitat for Humanity: Building Homes with Volunteers
Habitat for Humanity is a Christian organization that helps low income individuals build homes by sending volunteers from all over the world. The organization built more than 225,000 homes for over one million people by 2006 and works in tandem with local groups to organize volunteers. The group provides vital services for people in nations all over the world, and volunteers often cite work with the group as a life changing experience.
Habitat for Humanity doesn't give homes away. The group does not believe that giving out free homes makes people more likely to buy them, and the new owners pay for their homes, even though the price is greatly reduced. Homeowners help to build their homes with volunteers.
If the home had been simply given away, the owner would not have a sense of accomplishment because of the combined investment of money and labor. Homeowners contribute to the organization by living in and using their new homes because the monthly mortgage payments are used to fund projects in other parts of the world. Habitat for Humanity does not discriminate against home applications on the basis of religion, even though it is a Christian organization.
The experience of working in an environment that encourages mutual respect and courtesy is often said to be educational and enlightening for all parties. The organization builds homes that are in line with the cultural norm of the homeowner. It is committed to sustainable practices and works to encourage them in the communities it is active in.
