What Is Natural Gas?

Block Flow Diagram for Natural Gas Processing Plant

Natural gas is a non-renewable source of energy used for heating, cooking, and electricity generation. It is used as a chemical input in the manufacture of plastic and other important organic chemicals. Natural gas is sometimes referred to as "gas", even when it is being compared to other energy sources.

It is not to be confused with gasoline, which is often shortened to "gas" in North America. The schematic block flow diagram is for a natural gas processing plant. The processes used to convert raw natural gas into sales gas are shown.

It is not easy to store natural gas or to transport it by vehicle because of its low density. Natural gas is impractical across oceans since the gas needs to be cooled down and compressed, and the gas can heat up. Some politicians from northern states are talking about potential shortages because many existing lines are close to their capacity.

Natural gas markets are less integrated due to the large trade cost. The gas network in Western Europe is dense. In the late 1970s, Saudi Arabia invented a "master gas system" that ended the need for flaring.

Flares and ventilating are still practiced in some gas-extracting countries. Natural gas is often stored in tanks as a form of gas. When demand picks up, the gas is injected and then taken out.

Search for Natural Gas

The search for natural gas begins with geologists who study the structure and processes of the earth. They find the types of formations that are likely to hold natural gas. Geologicalists use surveys on land in the ocean to find the right places to drill oil and gas wells.

The geology of rock formations can be determined by the creation and measurement of seismic waves. A thumper truck is used to create seismic waves in the ground. Sometimes small amounts of explosives are used.

sonic waves are created by blasts of sound that explore the geology beneath the ocean floor. If the results of the surveys show that a site has the potential to produce gas, an exploratory well is drilled. The results of the test show the quality and quantity of natural gas in the area.

Natural gas companies add mercaptan to the gas to make it smell unpleasant and to help detect leaks in the natural gas network. Mercaptan is a harmless chemical that smells like rotten eggs. The United States produces most of the natural gas consumed in the country.

Natural Gas

Natural gas is used in a lot of applications. Half of American homes use gas for home heating. Natural gas is being used for electric power generation.

British thermal units are used to measure natural gas. The heat needed to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree is equivalent to one Btu. A lot of power is held by a small amount of natural gas.

Natural Methane Gas

Natural methane gas is a colourless highly flammable gaseous hydrocarbon consisting of methane and ethane. It is a type of oil that is associated with crude oil. Natural gas is used for electricity generation, heating, and cooking, and as a fuel for certain vehicles.

It is a chemical that is used in the manufacture of plastic and is also used in a wide range of other chemical products. The home-heating market for natural gas in the US was limited until the 1930s, when cheaper and abundant natural gas replaced the town gas that was the main source of heating. Carbon dioxide and water are formed when natural gas burns completely.

The burning of fossil fuels can cause soot, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides, but the gas is relatively free of those. Sulfur dioxide emissions, a major air pollutant, are almost completely absent. Coal has been replaced by natural gas a fuel for electric power plants in many parts of the world.

Natural Gas in Russia

Natural gas is a mixture of hydrocarbons, a subject of a religious cult and academic disputes. It is not visible or odorless. Russia has more natural gas than anywhere else in the world.

Natural gas is likely to be mentioned in any discussion about fuel and resources. Some think it could be possible to remove the modern world from its dependence on oil and coal. It is readily available in many locations around the globe.

The Role of Drilling and Recovery Technologies in the Development, Production & Use Of Natural Gas

New drilling and natural gas recovery technologies reduce the area that is disturbed to develop oil and gas resources. The use of horizontal and directional drilling techniques makes it possible to produce more natural gas from a single well than in the past, so fewer wells are needed to develop a natural gas field. Government regulations and industry standards are in place to ensure the safe transportation, storage, distribution, and use of natural gas. Natural gas companies add a rotten egg-smelling substance called mercaptan to natural gas so that people can smell leaks.

Composition of Natural Gas

The composition of natural gas is different depending on where you are. Each well has different amounts of each component. Natural gas is a mixture of gasses.

Compressed Natural Gas for Commercial Vehicles

Natural gas is compressed to less than 1% of its volume. The compressed gas is stored onboard a vehicle at a pressure of up to 3,600 pounds per square inch to provide adequate driving range. Light-, medium-, and heavy-duty applications are where the CNG is used.

A vehicle powered by compressed natural gas gets the same fuel economy as a vehicle powered by gasoline. The GGE is equivalent to about 5.66 pounds of CNG. The fuel's use in commercial applications has been limited because of its high production cost and the need to store it in expensive tanks.

The pressure vessels that hold the gas must be kept at cold temperatures. Liquid is denser than gas and therefore more energy can be stored by volume. Medium and heavy-duty vehicles are usually used with LNG.

Natural Gas in the United States

The United States consumed over 26 trillion of natural gas in 2012 in the electric power and industrial sectors. Natural gas production has grown substantially in the last decade, but consumption still exceeds production. Most of the balance is supplied by Canada's imports of pipe.

A smaller amount is imported via supertankers. Natural gas is used in buildings for space and water heating and for cooking, accounting for over a third of US natural gas consumption. Natural gas was used in half of all US homes in 2013; 70 percent of new homes have gas heating systems.

Home furnaces can reach 90 percent efficiency. Natural gas can be used to make hydrogen. A fuel cell is the most efficient way to convert hydrogen into electricity.
